L'Italia - almeno l'Italia come la immaginiamo qui nei paesi stranieri - scompare. Certo un paese, una società, una cultura non possono scomparire letteralmente; forse è più corretto dire che cambiano. Ma, l'effetto è veramente di una scomparsa. L'Italia come la immaginiamo esiste ancora, ma solamente come una facciata sottile sottile. Una facciata mantenuta dagli Italiani per noi stranieri, noi turisti, noi emigrati. Una facciata mantenuta addirittura per gli Italiani stessi.

Italy - at least the Italy that we imagine from abroad - is disappearing. Of course, a country, a society, a culture can't literally disappear; perhaps it's more correct to say that they are changing. But, the effect is truly one of a disappearance. The Italy that we imagine still exists, but only as the most fragile of facades. A facade maintained by the Italians for us foreigners, us tourists, us emigrants. A facade maintained even for the Italians themselves.

Il punto di vista espresso sopra è mio, raggiunto dopo venticinque anni in cui ho visitato e fotografato l'Italia, l'ho osservata attraverso i media, e l'ho osservata attraverso gli occhi dei miei famigliari e amici italiani. The point of view expressed above is mine, reached after twenty-five years of visiting and photography Italy, of observing Italy through the media, and through the eyes of my Italian family members and friends. I am a visual artist and the photographs that follow are mine. The texts are edited from web postings and comments sent to me. La società italiana vive in uno stato d’incertezza permanente e quindi c’è uno stato d’animo molto diffuso di sfiducia e diffidenza verso i governanti, verso le istituzioni, nei rapporti cittadino-stato che trova il suo fondamento nella crisi culturale, politica e anche religiosa. Questa si traduce in crisi di civiltà, per cui si ha dell’Italia un quadro desolante e si assiste impotenti a questo declino.

Italian society is living in a permanent state of uncertainty and there is, therefore, a widespread state of the soul of distrust and diffidence versus those who are governing, versus the institutions, and in the citizen-state relationship that finds its foundation in a cultural, political and even religious crisis. This becomes a crisis of civilization resulting in a picture of Italy that is desolate and in a decline that we can only observe, impotently.

Abbiamo l’immigrazione senza controllo e per l’altissimo numero di immigrati ci stiamo rendendo conto di perdere l’identità nazionale, andando avanti così nel giro di pochi anni saremo metà italiani e metà stranieri e questo non è giusto che accada e non deve accadere.

We have uncontrolled immigration and, because of the extremely high numbers of immigrants, we are becoming aware of losing our national identity. Going ahead like this, within a period of a few years we will be half Italian and half foreigner. It is not right that this should happen, and it must not happen.

Il cibo veloce della strada scompare sotto l’onda del cibo veloce di McDonald e Burger King. Quello della strada fa parte delle grandi tradizioni italiane, l’altro fa parte della globalizzazione. Quello della strada aiuta l’intraprendenza Italiana, l’altro aiuta la colonizzazione del popolo italiano.

Street “fast food” is disappearing under the wave of the fast food of McDonald’s and Burger King. Street “fast food” is a great Italian tradition; the other fast food is part of globalization. Street “fast food” supports Italian entrepreneurship; the other fast food supports the colonization of the Italian people.

Gli italiani hanno perso l’arte di arrangiarsi. La società italiana è stata attraversata da profondi cambiamenti: in parte eredità del passato recente, in parte prodotti da eventi nuovi, in parte riflesso di trasformazioni globali. Si tratta, in larga misura, di tendenze comuni al contesto internazionale e, in particolare, al resto d’Europa: la globalizzazione, l’immigrazione, l’invecchiamento, l’insicurezza, il disincanto civile. Tuttavia, questi mutamenti sembrano avere indebolito un aspetto sociale tanto condiviso, nella percezione degli italiani, da proporsi – e imporsi – come un marchio del carattere nazionale. Ci riferiamo alla capacità adattiva della società, ritenuta in grado di supplire e di reagire ai limiti dello Stato e del sistema pubblico anche, e forse soprattutto, nei periodi di maggiore difficoltà.

The Italians have lost their art of getting by. Italian society has been affected by profound changes - in part inherited from the recent past, in part the products of new events, in part reflections of global transformations. This has to do, in large measure, with shared international tendencies, in particular those of the rest of Europe: globalization, immigration, aging populations, insecurity, civic disenchantment. Nevertheless, these changes seem to have weakened an aspect of Italian society so thoroughly shared - in the perception of the Italians - as to be seen as an identifier of the national character. I refer to the adaptive capacity of the society, in the past able to function in place of state and public systems even, and above all, in the times of greatest difficulty.

L'Italia, il suo territorio, era la casa degli italiani. Questo territorio era stabilito da confini che permettono di identificare lo Stato italiano. Non esiste «Stato» se non esiste il suo territorio e il suo popolo. Con la recente cancellazione della clandestinità dal governo italiano, invece, si afferma che non esiste un territorio appartenente allo Stato italiano, un territorio che lo Stato rivendica come suo, e che non esiste un popolo italiano in quanto chiunque vi si può introdurre e mescolare.

Italy - its territory - used to be the home of the Italians. This territory was established by borders that allowed an Italian state to be defined. A “state” does not exist without its own territory and its own population. With the Italian government’s recent abolishing of criminality for undocumented status, it is now affirmed that there is no territory belonging to an Italian state, no territory claimed by that state. Neither does there exist an Italian population in that absolutely anyone can choose to join it and mix with it.

Penso che non si devano scrivere frasi come quelle precedente sull'immigrazione, particolarmente senza avere dati esatti. L'Italia ha un tasso d'immigrazione molto più basso di quello di altri paesi europei (Francia, Germania, Inghilterra, persino Spagna). Gli immigrati in Italia non restano, e vogliono andare nei paesi dove forse c'è più lavoro e più assistenza sociale. Questo tipo di commento è tipico del pensiero di destra europeo, che è anti-immigrante e razzista (ma non anti-stato come la destra degli USA). Che l’Italia sia orribilmente mal governata è un fatto, ma è anche una caratteristica della nostra storia, storia molto recente poiché siamo uno stato e una nazione solo dal 1870.

I believe that we should not write sentences, such as those above, about immigration, especially without precise data. Italy has an immigration rate much lower than that of other European countries (France, Germany, England, even Spain). Those who have immigrated into Italy won't stay; they want to go to countries that may have more work and better social assistence. This kind of comment is typical of the thinking of the European Right Wing, which is anti-immigration and racist (but not anti-government like the Right Wing in the U.S.) It Italy is terribly governed is a fact, but it is also a characteristic of our history—a recent history in that we are a united state and a nation only since 1870.

L'imbruttimento e la cementificazione dell’Italia, la volgarità notevole della sua televisione, la ristrettezza del suo pubblico intellettuale, e anche l'ossificazione della casta baronale di professori che domina le università non hanno nulla da che fare coll’immigrazione. La disoccupazione dei giovani e il peso tremendo della burocrazia neppure. Io non ho mai visto l’Italia nei termini qui descritti, dunque non penso che scompaia. Mi preoccupano la bruttezza e la rovina dei suoi tesori e dei suoi paesaggi ma, ci sono anche delle cose che migliorano: treni, trasporti, servizi postali, internet e il sistema sanitario e il secondo migliore al mondo per la WHO. Chi vive all’estero dovrebbe sforzarsi di conoscere quello che veramente é l'Italia e non averne una visione romantica.

The overbuilding and uglification of Italy, the noteworthy vulgarity of its television, the narrow-mindedness of its intellectual public, and the ossification of its baronial caste of professors that dominates the universities have nothing to do with immigration. Neither do its youth unemployment nor the tremendous burden of its bureaucracy. I have never seen Italy in the terms described here; consequently, I don't think that it is disappearing. I am worried about ugliness and about the ruination of its treasures and its landscapes but there are also things that are improving: trains, transport, postal services, the internet, and its health system is the second best in the world according to the World Health Organization. Those who live outside Italy must force themselves to learn that which is truly Italy and not have just a romantic image of it.
